UNJournal Lee Sung Jun | The Embassy of Peru in the Republic of Korea hosted an official reception on 28 July 2026 at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul to mark the 205th anniversary of Peru's independence, drawing approximately 350 guests including senior Korean government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of international organizations, and figures from the business, academic and media sectors.
Won Chong-dae, Deputy Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Korea, delivered congratulatory remarks at the event, reaffirming the shared commitment of Peru and Korea to strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Yong Gu Kim, Honorary Consul of Peru in Incheon, proposed the ceremonial toast in celebration of the two countries' longstanding friendship.
In his address, the Ambassador of Peru referenced the beginning of President Keiko Fujimori's administration and reaffirmed the government's commitment to positioning Peru as a reliable partner for Korea, including through contributions to Korean food security and the supply of critical minerals essential to the country's manufacturing and high-technology industries. He also pointed to planned cooperation on strategic projects in the security and defense sectors.
The ambassador further stressed the government's resolve to pursue the public policies and reforms needed to complete Peru's accession to the OECD, describing it as an important national objective for which Peru values Korea's continued support.
Cultural and culinary program
The reception featured an extensive showcase of Peruvian gastronomy, anchored by a Ceviche Festival presenting four varieties of the country's signature dish: Traditional Ceviche, Mixed Ceviche, Asian-style Ceviche, and Tiradito de Ají Amarillo. A Pisco Bar offered cocktails made with Peru's national spirit.
Cultural performances included a rendition of well-known Peruvian melodies, among them "El Cóndor Pasa" and "Vírgenes del Sol," by the Korean harp ensemble Seonhanullim. The program concluded with a performance by the group Latin Peru.
The evening also featured a special exhibition of Peruvian Hanboks, presented by the Korean Culture Association as an initiative created specifically for the celebration. The garments combined traditional Andean textiles with the design of the Korean Hanbok, under the concept "Where the Winds of the Andes Embrace Hanbok," intended to symbolize the cultural ties between the two countries.
The Embassy of Peru expressed appreciation to guests, partners, sponsors and collaborators who supported the event marking Peru's National Day.
