Embassy of India Marks 12th International Day of Yoga at Gwanghwamun Square, Drawing 1,000 Participants

Set against the backdrop of Gyeongbok Palace, Seoul's central plaza hosted a two-and-a-half-hour yoga celebration themed "Yoga for Healthy Ageing," as part of a nationwide series of events across South Korea.

UNJournal Lee Sung Jun | The Embassy of India in Seoul, in collaboration with Viveka Yoga, hosted the 12th International Day of Yoga at Gwanghwamun Square on June 21, 2026, under the theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing." Approximately 1,000 participants gathered at the iconic public square, set against the historic Gyeongbok Palace, including Korean yoga practitioners, members of the Indian community, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.

The event featured a two-and-a-half-hour programme comprising the Common Yoga Protocol alongside a series of yoga demonstrations by Korean practitioners and organisations. Around 15 local yoga groups also operated informational and experiential booths at the venue, reflecting the expanding interest in yoga within Korean society.

A Message of Shared Well-Being

In his remarks, Ambassador of India to the Republic of Korea, Mr. Gourangalal Das, spoke to the growing relevance of yoga in an increasingly fast-paced world, highlighting its contribution to holistic well-being and preventive healthcare. Drawing on the event's central theme, he emphasised the shared aspirations of India and South Korea to build healthier, more inclusive societies — ones in which people can lead longer and more meaningful lives.

The theme "Yoga for Healthy Ageing" carries particular resonance in the context of both nations, as India and South Korea each grapple with the challenges and opportunities of ageing populations and evolving public health priorities.

A Nationwide Series of Outreach Activities

The Gwanghwamun Square celebration formed the centrepiece of a broader programme of yoga outreach activities organised by the Embassy in the weeks leading up to and surrounding International Day of Yoga 2026.

A curtain-raiser event was held at Namsan-gol Hanok Village on April 7, offering an early introduction to the season's celebrations. In May, the Embassy conducted Yoga for Productivity at the Workplace sessions at the Hyosung Office on May 22 and at two leading Korean research institutions — the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) — on May 27.

Through June, the Embassy extended its reach beyond Seoul with the support of local partners. Events were held at Jeju Island on June 7 and in Busan on June 13, both organised in partnership with the India Centre at Busan University of Foreign Studies (BUFS). A further session took place in Seoul on June 14 as part of the Car-Free Jamsu Bridge Festival.

The IDY 2026 celebration series in South Korea is scheduled to conclude on June 27 at Nami Island, in cooperation with Nami Island Arts and Education Inc. — bringing the nationwide programme to a close at one of Korea's most beloved natural landmarks.
